Archive #16 De Fuckups – Oomph

PLATEX 6003 -2006

Who would have thought that those pimply punks that populated places like Simplon and the squats round town in the early eighties would still be alive in 2006 and would still be playing punk-rock. Well some of them are. In fact they play better than ever! Fuckups singer Menno was probably still in kindergarten round that time and sounds like the bastard son of Bon Scott or Peter Bootsman. The combination of old farts and young upstarts produces real kick-ass rock ‘ n roll. We could have picked any of their songs but choose ‘ Oomph‘ for a cybersinglerelease. ( because we like short titles…)

Archive #15 Krause – I lost my tampon

PLATEX 6002  – 2006

Krause knows how to get the attention; with pumping beats, dirty sounds, a tiny black dress and an absurd performance. Her songs and lyrics vary from serious and dark to light hearted and banal. This ‘onegirlformation’ is a newcomer on the elektro-territory, and she’s determined to put her teeth in it and never let go! ‘I lost my tampon’ is the intriguing title of her first cybersingle.

Archive #13 Mullhouse – Steppin’ stone

PLATEX 5009 – 2005

This tale about a wicked little boy starts out as a ‘normal’ pop song but ends in an aural asylum. Mullhouse is one of those Frisian bands that came to Groningen.
(like Planet Orange, Cochon Bleu and Weekend at Waikiki before them) Groningen is the next big city and has always been a good place to further develop your music.(and your drinking habits) Listening to Mullhouse we hear different influences but there is definitely a unique sound.

Platex 5007 – 2005
This beautiful piece of POP NOIR was made by mysterious duo Pocon Attis and Lugtmeyer. We were immediately impressed by the dark sounds of ‘Momma you almost crashed us’. Pocon Attis is a great singer, the music is addictive and we’re pretty sure you never heard anything like CYRK before.

Archive #11 The Monroes – Sad & Blue

PLATEX 5006 – 2005

Sad and Blue? You won’t be after you’ve heard
the Monroes!
The hottest band from Holland since Shocking Blue according to Evert ‘Grunnen Rocks‘ Nijkamp. And he should know. The Monroes know how to rock and how to write a song. Dirty? Yes! Garage? For sure! But always with a lot of SOUL!

Don’t fall in love with the singer. You’ll be the last in a long, long line.

The Monroes are:

Josje Kobes – vocals, guitar
Harry Kingma – double bass, bass guitar
Arnold Nieborg – guitar
Peter Blokzijl – drums

Archive #10 John Jett and the Dingoes – Bullroarer

PLATEX 5005 – 2005

‘Bullroarer’ is the recording debut for Australian guitar player John Jett. This chunky instrumental is named after a native Aboriginal musical instrument, which carries its sound for several miles. The bullroarer is used to warn people: there’s a men-only meeting coming up, not suitable for women and children. Watch out, girls.

John Jett was already an accomplished surf guitar player when for the first time in his life he saw waves. John was born and raised in the Alice Springs area in central Australia, where the creeks are hot and rain falls once every couple of years. He learned the tricks of the trade by listening to his Uncle Swagger’s enormous collection of Californian surf trash records.

Jett travelled north to the Darwin area and played night after night with his trio Ayers Rock, often to confused audiences who expected his namesake Joan (‘Where is the chick singer?’) on stage. Like most folks from down under he saved money for years and undertook a trip to Europe. In the city of Groningen he met his girl Marieke and decided to stay on. Platex Records fell like a brick for John Jett’s growling string strumming style. ‘Bullroarer’ was recorded with local musicians Sieto Kiewiet and Dim Junius. “Good guys”, John says, “if I strike it big I will surely take ‘em home to Australia to play the barns and beaches.

I reckon!

Archive #9 Planet orange – Ma belle

PLATEX 5004 – 2005

They deceive you into a latin-rock intro, but just when you expect someone to sing “Oye Como Va” the sky clutters and you are sucked into the wonderful world of Planet Orange.
‘Ma Belle’ is an unprecedented chunk of poldersoul in the best of this band’s fashion.

Rolling drums and screaming keys, Dikkie’s characteristic growl and punching guitars over a pumping bass and a trumpet added for good measure.

Don’t miss this. Planet Orange should be on top of the music firmament. Don’t make them wait.

Archive #8 Cochon Bleu – Polonaise (mardi gras)

‘PLATEX 5003 – 2005

You can top off a pizza with sauerkraut. But no satisfaction compares to listening to Cochon Bleu’s new single ‘Polonaise (Mardi Gras)’. The best dressed quintet in town slips and slides into wonderful riffs, a powerful drum, and the curious tale of a Polish bride who willingly cooks a heartbreaking meal.
But will the jury approve? Cochon Bleu : Douze points!

Jeroen ‘DE KRAAI’ De Jong: lead vocals, accordion, melodion
Henk ‘DE CLU’ Gubbels: tenor backing vocals, electric guitar, violin
Hette ‘DE PIGGE’ Gubbels: high tenor backing vocals, mandolin

Archive #7 Onakentona – Let’s go back

PLATEX 5002 – 2005

Despite the subject and the fact that an acoustic piano can be heard on this song, there’s no need for alarm for Onankentona fans: ‘Let’s Go Back’ rocks! Singer Dave van der Bor takes us back to his birthplace Surinam for a nostalgic view on his childhood. Accompanied by drummer Bijlman and bass man Andre Manninghe feedbacks his way through this fantastic song. Why this band isn’t famous yet is the big question.
Go see ‘m live and be convinced: Onakentona Rules!

We were jumping ’round the room all night long, when ‘My Girl’ by Baseless arrived at Platex headquarters. Do they know what they’re doing? This is what makes a real single! Incredible power, catchy hooks and a chorus that nestles in your brain for at least a week. The globe is their home. The four guys of Baseless come from Bulgaria, Brazil, Germany and Holland and found each other on the Utrecht University College campus. They’re still young, and the ceaseless touring that Usually follows being a hit with Platex will soon reveal the great promise Baseless makes.

Archive #5 Dr. Max Strammer – Dalli dalli

PLATEX 4004 – 2004

“Jubel, Trubel, Heiterkeit!” Dr. Max Strammer fondly remembers the Tyrolian style adult movies he starred in, during the seventies. The soundtracks to those pictures were ever jolly, good humoured and engaging tunes, so is Dalli, Dalli! Nowadays porn industry doesn’t tickle his fancy anymore: “Keine Lustigkeit, nur Bumsi Bumsi.”

His real name is Holger Vaszlovski(1949). He played leading parts in numerous sex films during the seventies, which came out of the flourishing Bavarian studios of the era. His particular physical features rendered him the nick-name Maxi. Strammer was added later for promotional reasons. He would have kept the job, had it not been for the outbreak of AIDS. Maxi decided it was time for a new turn in life and started in music. He added the ‘Doktor’ to his stage name in honour of his idol, Jamaican star Dr. Alimentado. In the early eighties Dr. Max Strammer had small hits with his particular blend of kraut-reggae, ‘Kaninchen’ reached the German top-twenty and ‘Jah Jah Bum Chah’ even made it to the Italian charts. But his fellow musicians deserted him, and became rock star Nena’s live backing band. The ever good humoured Dr. Max Strammer took his losses with a smile and went back to his native Bremerhaven, where he combines a modest career as a fisherman with the management of his late uncle’s chicken farm. Now he has returned to the music scene. Dr. Max Strammer hits back with a musical gem of great charm. From the country of Bach, Beethoven, Beckenbauer, all the Strausses and Peter Maffay, Platex Records presents Dalli, Dalli!

The result, “Come In”, is a dark and sinister song with an irresistable hook.
Saro’s duet with Inge Huizenga* brings back memories of other great duo’s like Marvin & Tammi, Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, Menno & Marjan and Saskia & Serge.

‘Come In” is dedicated to the memory of   Saro Paradiso sr.

Archive #3 Tiedo – Nothing

PLATEX 4003 -2004

“I can listen to Tiedo for hours and hours.”
Billy Potok

‘Nothing’ is a fresh tasty chunk of the improbable talents of Tiedo. The singer/songwriter from Groningen was in last year’s finals of the Grote Prijs van Nederland-contest and already released two albums: ‘Soul Jet’ (1999) and ‘Where My Dream Can Take Me’ (2001). Tiedo’s tunes show well layered structures under easy melodies that go straight to the heart after a first listening. He’s not only gifted with a great voice: whenever he sees an instrument he doesn’t already know, it takes less than twenty minutes before he can play it. He doesn’t believe in recording studio’s anymore. Tiedo built his own studio at home, where he can work on his music without outside pressures. He plays all the instruments on ‘Nothing’. He also contributed generously to Billy Potok’s ‘I See All The Colours Of The Rainbow’. ‘Nothing’ may not be the first record released by Tiedo, it surely is his first single and another great tune from the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/DIY-producer… You name it!

Archive #2 The Kickers – Koprot

PLATEX 4002 – 2004

“I saw the future of Rock ’n Roll, and they’re called
the Kickers”.
Billy Potok

Three guys, two of  ‘m not even twenty yet, with no other intention than to blow your mind and eardrums with fast and loud Rock ’n Roll. The Kickers from Rockcity Grunn (Groningen, the Netherlands) have become bored with soft commercial punkpop and lifeless emo. To be a part of the solution rather than the problem they decided to play wilder, faster and louder than the competion. And they succeeded! To young to drive a motorcycle they all own and drive a socalled ‘Bakbrommer’, a vehicle that was used in the past by people who couldn’t afford a car, but has now become the coolest way of transportation in the cities of Holland. This has become part of their image. And it works! Often you see them drive around with at least one beautiful girl. Who needs a Cadillac?
Platex Records proudly presents their first single. ‘Koprot’.

the Blaisdell Studio by Michiel Cornelisse October 2004.

Archive #1 – Billy Potok I see all the colours of the rainbow

PLATEX 4001 – 2004

I See All The Colours Of The Rainbow’ is a song as charming and colourful as its creator, former Polish child star Billy Potok (1976). The song was originally intended as the opening tune for a rock-opera about 60’s Britpop bands, but when Billy finished the song he felt it stood proudly on its own. ‘The whole story is there in four minutes’ he said. PLATEX proudly presents ‘I See All The Colours Of The Rainbow’ as a single you can download on your computer. Billy Potok fled his native country after the gutter press discovered he was having an affair with a lady not only ten years older than he, but also married to another man. In prude catholic Poland this caused a big scandal, and Billy fell from grace. Up to then he had been a household name for some years. Billy Potok was discovered at a singing contest by manager Stanislav Brodsky – a former high ranking member of the Communist Party – and soon became lead singer with the famous boy-group Chlopcy. After seven top-ten singles in Poland, Belarus and Lithuania the group disbanded after discovering Brodski had taken all their profits to the race-track. Billy – still in his teens – went solo as a singer/songwriter and struck gold when he wrote and sang the tune for Poland’s first television soap-series ‘Dobre czasy, zle czasy’. Both song and series became big hits. That’s when Billy fell in love with Sylvia Shebreniza, the leading lady who played 16-year old Maria in ‘Dobre czasy, zle czasy’. In real life she was already 29, and when fans found out about this, it was too late. Shebreniza retired from showbizz and Billy left for England, where he settled in Blackpool. Influenced by the likes of The Kinks and The Small Faces, Billy started writing his masterwork, an opera about a songwriter’s fear of competing with his own bandmembers. This summer Billy Potok came to Groningen (The Netherlands) to visit a Dutch girl he had fallen in love with on the boat to England. He befriended The Kickers and was introduced to the owners of PLATEX. When they heard the opera’s title song they were totally lost, grasping for air at the surprise of such a great tune. And so ‘I See All The Colours Of The Rainbow’ was recorded in Groningen with local musicians.
